Tutoring Services

I offer tutoring or private language lessons in French or Spanish. And I am an excellent teacher.

I have taught both languages for over 20 years. I earned my undergraduate degree and teaching credentials from Wake Forest University where I studied two semesters abroad, one each in Dijon and in Salamanca. Since then, I have traveled to South America five times and have taken student groups to France (2 of which were exchanges that I created) at least five times while also traveling to francophone countries for pleasure. I continue to read, listen to music, watch TV, follow social media, and communicate in both languages in order to stay current.

For private lessons, I create a curriculum specifically designed for you, based on your personal goals. Here are some common reasons people seek private lessons and why you would choose me as your specialized teacher with some strategies:

  • You will be traveling to a French- or Spanish-speaking country, so we focus on language necessary for travel.
  • You seek to brush up on language skills first derived in high school or college, so I will focus on a more conversational approach.
  • You are traveling on a mission trip, so I will tailor the language for your medical or religious (for example) content.
  • You are seeking to broaden your work capacity by including speakers of another language, so we would include the specialized vocabulary of your profession.
  • You want to become an excellent speaker and communicator in French or Spanish, so we would develop an intensive curriculum including speaking, reading, and writing.

I charge $35 for one person for a one-hour session. For groups, I charge $30 per person for 2-3 people and $25 per person when there are 4. I accept students from ages 2 to any. Plan on committing to 10 lessons for a level. I will travel no more than 30 minutes from my home, (so that includes Winston-Salem, High Point, parts of Greensboro, Mocksville, Statesville, Rural Hall, and Yadkinville). The best place to meet is where you live or work. It is also nice to meet in a café or library study room.

Our understanding must be that once you begin with either tutoring or lessons that you have a plan in mind, because I do. Between times we meet, there will be things for you to do in order to be successful. It is the only way to progress. I am always prepared for you and I put time into an excellent experience for you. It is not OK to quit after three lessons because you do not want to take the time to learn numbers or verbs. You owe it to yourself to get through the mundane parts so that you can enjoy the flow of conversation and ease of communication. Your success depends on your consistency.
